Dot, Line, Thread, Wave

A point walks into a line, a body draws lines in space, a line of thread pierces through cloth, a dot etches glass, a wave of light reverberates into sound. From neurological brain waves flowing from arm to form, these artists use line to create multi-dimensional conceptual drawings; on paper and on walls, in lace and in glass, in performance, and through invisible lines of light and sound. Together their works draw a resonant immersive world.
Colleen Coleman’s performance drawings are cartographic, vibrational readings that use her full body to dance graphite across a wall, bare feet planted on floor, blackened hands presented to the room in an act of embodied defiance. The performance and remaining drawing declaratively position the aging and black female body in the white box space. Katherine Jackson utilizes the technology of light as an expressive device; she etches letters, dots, pulses, lines, and bullets into thick sheets of glass. Illuminated at the edges, ethereal drawings glow in a liminal space of light, while glass works shot through with bullets become artifact drawings of violence. Chris Kaczmarek builds solar powered sound installations, drawing waves of light into engines that clack eggshells together, making light waves insistently visible through sound. He follows lines of labyrinths in chalk, rock, or other materials, in both indoor and outdoor spaces, and creates shared mapping projects in collaborative drawing walks. Patricia Miranda threads donated lace together into monumental wall drawings, lines of thread creating geometries of positive and negative shapes of delicate patterns of webs and nets. She leads sewing circles inviting the community to thread individual lace and stories into large works. Her ethereal gilded drawings on glass trace lines of lace in delicate threads of gold leaf. Jo Yarrington’s work uses material explorations to reveal patterns and rituals hidden in the everyday. In much of her work, time acts as medium, and records of light become artifacts. Her quietly steady plumb bob hangs over a circular cyanotype vortex, while shifts in light traverse a wall into ephemeral drawings.
The exhibition includes works on paper, glass, and textile, solar powered sound installations, labyrinth and mapping walks, and performance drawing.

WAKE WORK: 5TH ITERATION
A Durational Drawing Performance by Colleen L. Coleman
Equal parts portal, protest, and prayer, Wake Work: 5th Iteration is a durational drawing performance rooted in ritual, remembrance, collective witnessing, and radical love. Responding to Black lives lost under troubling circumstances and to missing people too often unseen, Coleman works in graphite, dressed in blue. Like a radio telescope receiving waves from distant space, Coleman reads the vibrations moving through the room. A continuous line forms ellipses, spirals, circles, and pathways, mapping energy, memory, and presence. Artist and audience occupy this continuum together: she documents; they witness. In conversation with Christina Sharpe and bell hooks, Wake transforms remembrance into action—an insistence on seeing, caring, protecting, and refusing disappearance.
